The rapid growth of intensive dairy goat farming has created a sector where welfare standards, research evidence, and regulatory oversight have not kept pace with production scale. Many welfare challenges in dairy goat farming mirror those of dairy cattle: separation of offspring, lameness, mastitis, and painful husbandry procedures without adequate analgesia. But the research base for goat welfare is substantially thinner, meaning that even producers motivated to adopt evidence-based welfare practices have less guidance available. The species-specific aspects of goat welfare including their browsing motivation, social preferences, and environmental needs add further complexity. Addressing this gap requires investment in welfare research, development of goat-specific welfare standards, and extension of mandatory welfare provisions to include dairy goats alongside cattle and pigs.
