Tilapia farming is sometimes presented as more sustainable and higher welfare than salmon farming but faces its own significant welfare challenges at scale.
Tilapia welfare is generally better than salmon welfare on several measures: the absence of wild fish in feed chains removes a significant welfare externality, and tilapia biology makes them more tolerant of the crowding conditions that intensive aquaculture requires. However, better relative welfare is not the same as good welfare. High-density intensive tilapia production still involves crowding that causes chronic stress, disease pressure requiring antibiotic treatment in some systems, and handling and harvesting stress that causes acute welfare harm. The hormone treatments used for sex reversal raise welfare and environmental questions that are not yet well resolved. Tilapia farming represents a better baseline than carnivorous fish farming, but still has substantial room for welfare improvement, particularly in disease management, water quality, and slaughter practices.
