Managed honeybee welfare is a relatively new concept in beekeeping, with welfare science for colonial insects still in early development. The practical welfare challenges are real, however: varroa infestation causes individual bee and whole-colony suffering through physical damage and disease vectoring, nutritional deficits in monoculture landscapes compromise immune function and larval development, and pesticide exposure causes neurological damage and colony mortality. Responsible beekeeping addresses these challenges through integrated pest management that controls varroa effectively, siting hives near diverse forage sources, minimising pesticide exposure through location choices and beekeeper advocacy, and adopting management practices that minimise unnecessary disturbance. The welfare of managed bee colonies is also connected to the welfare of wild pollinators, as disease can spread between managed and wild populations.
