Genomic selection represents one of the most powerful tools available for addressing inherited welfare problems at population scale. Where traditional breeding required many generations and large populations to shift heritable traits, genomic tools accelerate the process by predicting genetic merit with high accuracy from early-life DNA testing. The welfare implication is that diseases and conformational problems with genetic basis can be reduced within a decade of sustained selection pressure. This creates a genuine opportunity to address welfare problems that are deeply embedded in existing populations, including the brachycephalic airway obstruction in flat-faced dog breeds, the bone health problems in laying hens, and the lameness predisposition in high-production dairy cattle. The limiting factor is not the technology but the willingness of breeding organisations, registries, and commercial customers to prioritise welfare traits alongside or above production traits.
