Sea lice represent one of aquaculture's most serious animal welfare challenges. Lice feeding on salmon skin causes genuine suffering — fish display pain behaviours, immune suppression, and stress responses to infestation. Mechanical treatments such as thermolicer (warm water baths) and hydrolicer (high-pressure water) remove lice but themselves cause physical injury and stress, sometimes resulting in mortality. The welfare trade-off between leaving lice untreated versus applying stressful treatments is real and demands careful management decisions. Improved monitoring technology — including automated counting cameras and eDNA detection — allows earlier intervention at lower lice burdens, reducing both fish suffering and the ecological impact on wild fish.
