Rising temperatures due to climate change are increasing heat stress risk for livestock globally. Heat abatement strategies protect animal welfare, productivity, and health.
Heat stress is one of the most significant and growing animal welfare threats in agriculture. Unlike cold stress, which is often visible in animal behaviour, heat stress can progress from discomfort to organ failure and death with relatively little warning, particularly in intensive indoor systems where animals cannot access shade or cool ground. The welfare and productivity consequences of heat stress are aligned: hot cows produce less milk, hot pigs grow more slowly, and heat-stressed poultry have higher mortality — creating economic incentive for producers to invest in cooling. However, economic incentives are insufficient on their own: welfare standards should mandate minimum heat abatement requirements for all species in all production systems, not just where productivity losses make it commercially worthwhile.
