Ducks are among the most commonly farmed poultry species, yet their welfare needs — particularly for water access — are poorly addressed in intensive systems.
Duck welfare in intensive production systems is compromised by a fundamental incompatibility between the water-dependent biology of waterfowl and the dry, controlled environments of standard poultry housing. Ducks without bathing and swimming access develop eye infections, nasal discharge, and feather condition problems that are direct welfare indicators of deprivation. They cannot maintain the feather waterproofing that is essential for thermoregulation. Yet the industry standard in most intensive production systems — including many that claim to meet EU guidance — provides only drinking nipples or troughs that allow head submersion without true swimming or bathing opportunity. This is a gap between regulatory minimum and genuine welfare need that has not been adequately addressed in most markets.
