Artificial intelligence and sensor technologies are reshaping livestock farming, offering real-time health monitoring and early disease detection. But the welfare implications of precision livestock farming are complex and require careful evaluation.
Precision livestock farming represents both opportunity and risk for animal welfare. The opportunity lies in genuine early detection of health problems, reduced use of prophylactic antibiotics through targeted treatment, and the ability to monitor welfare indicators at scale that human stockpersons could never achieve alone. Studies show PLF systems can detect respiratory disease in pigs days earlier than visual inspection, potentially reducing suffering duration significantly. However, the risks are real: PLF can create a false sense of security, allowing farms to intensify production beyond welfare thresholds while claiming technological oversight. Sensor fatigue, alert suppression, and algorithmic bias are documented problems. The fundamental welfare question — whether the production system itself is appropriate — cannot be answered by technology. PLF is best understood as a complement to, not substitute for, genuinely good stockpersonship and appropriate housing conditions.
