Breed registration standards enforced by kennel clubs have created serious inherited health problems in many popular dog breeds. Reforming breed standards to prioritize health over exaggerated conformation is an urgent welfare priority.
The welfare consequences of breeding dogs for extreme physical characteristics are documented and severe. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome causes affected dogs to struggle to breathe during normal activity, sleep, and in warm weather — many require surgical intervention to breathe adequately. Syringomyelia in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels causes chronic pain as the brain is compressed in a skull too small to contain it. Hip and elbow dysplasia cause lifelong arthritis in breeds where genetic selection has outpaced health screening. These are not rare exceptions but endemic conditions accepted as normal within breeding communities that prize appearance over function. Reform requires kennel clubs to make health testing mandatory for registration, revise breed standards to exclude exaggerated features, and create financial incentives for health-focused breeders. Consumer demand is equally powerful: buyers who refuse to purchase from untested breeders or who avoid extreme conformation breeds drive market change.
