Guinea fowl are farmed for meat and insect control, but as semi-domesticated birds retaining strong wild behavioral repertoires, they present unique welfare challenges in intensive and extensive production systems.
Guinea fowl farming presents a distinctive welfare challenge: these are birds that are only partially domesticated, retaining behavioral needs shaped by African savannah environments. In intensive systems designed for domesticated poultry, guinea fowl fare poorly — they are chronically stressed by confinement, prone to feather pecking and injurious behavior, and ill-suited to the damp, cold conditions of European and North American poultry houses. Extensive free-range systems better meet their behavioral needs but create different welfare problems: high predation mortality, exposure to disease through wild bird contact, and welfare harms during predator attack events. The welfare optimum for guinea fowl lies in systems that provide large, secure range areas with dense vegetation for cover, robust shelter from adverse weather, and stable social groups sized appropriately for their natural flock structure. Given the limited research base compared to chickens or turkeys, welfare-focused producers are operating with incomplete guidance and should engage with emerging research actively.
