The social organization of pigs creates a recurring welfare challenge in commercial production systems: pigs that do not know each other fight, and fighting causes real injury. The wounds from mixing events are not trivial — bite wounds to ears, flanks and tails can be deep, become infected, and attract further aggression. The commercial logic of mixing groups — combining litters at weaning, regrouping by weight, filling empty spaces with animals from different batches — directly opposes pig social needs. Every mix event triggers an acute welfare harm. The welfare-optimal approach minimizes mixing by maintaining stable groups from birth to slaughter where possible, and when mixing is unavoidable, reduces its harm through careful management: mixing at off-peak times when animals are calm, providing abundant substrate and enrichment to redirect attention, ensuring adequate space and escape routes, and monitoring and treating injuries promptly. System-level design that enables stable group housing is the most powerful welfare lever available.
