Wildlife contraception represents a welfare-positive alternative to lethal population management that also avoids the ecological disruption of removing large numbers of animals from ecosystems. The welfare case for contraception over culling is straightforward: fertility control prevents reproduction without causing death or injury. The population management case requires more careful evaluation: contraception typically acts more slowly than culling, requires sustained effort and resource investment, and may be impractical in large remote populations. However, for populations that are accessible, politically contested, and sufficiently small, contraception delivers comparable population management outcomes with dramatically better welfare profiles. The development of longer-acting and bait-delivered contraceptive systems is expanding the range of species and contexts where non-lethal control is practical. The most successful programs combine contraception with habitat management, recognizing that population size is ultimately constrained by resource availability rather than reproductive rate alone.
