The stress of transfer — unfamiliar confinement, transport vibration and noise, disruption of social bonds, novel environments, and mandatory quarantine — is measurable in physiological terms: cortisol spikes, behavioral changes, reduced feeding, and in worst cases, death from transport-associated myopathy or immune suppression. The mitigation toolkit is well-established but inconsistently applied: systematic crate training over weeks or months that desensitizes animals to the transport container before transfer day; accompaniment of familiar social companions or bonded keeper where possible; transfer timing that avoids breeding season or other high-stress periods; minimized travel duration; and arrival conditions that include familiar smells and sounds before social introduction.
