Loading and unloading livestock are predictable welfare events that occur routinely throughout the lives of farm animals, yet they remain among the most commonly mismanaged welfare moments. The physiology of livestock — prey animals acutely sensitive to social stress, unfamiliar environments, and movement restriction — makes loading inherently challenging, but much of the stress and injury that occurs is avoidable with appropriate facility design and stockperson skill. Temple Grandin research and practical demonstration has established a clear evidence base: animals move more willingly and calmly through curved races that do not allow them to see what lies ahead; solid-sided races prevent external distractions from causing flight responses; gentle, patient handling that waits for animals to move voluntarily rather than forcing with sticks or electric goads produces better welfare outcomes and less injury.
