Untreated or late-treated cases progress to chronic pneumonia with permanent lung damage that compromises welfare for the remainder of the animal life. The primary welfare lever is prevention through stress reduction: managing weaning, transport, and mixing events to minimize immunosuppression; vaccination programs that provide specific pathogen protection; and nutritional support that maintains immune function through transition periods. Early detection — identifying animals in early BRD stages when treatment is most effective — requires trained stockpeople conducting twice-daily health checks using clinical scoring systems, and increasingly is supported by automated technology that flags animals with altered feeding or activity patterns. The antimicrobial stewardship dimension is linked to welfare: mass metaphylaxis treats many animals that would not have developed disease, while targeted treatment of confirmed cases achieves similar disease control with less antibiotic use and better welfare precision.
