Pig pen design is one of the most evidence-rich areas of farm animal welfare, with decades of research establishing clear relationships between space, complexity, resource provision, and welfare outcomes. The minimum legal space allowances in Europe represent compromise between economic and welfare interests rather than genuine welfare optima — pigs at minimum legal stocking density show significantly higher rates of aggression, tail biting, and competition for resources than pigs at recommended welfare densities. Pen shape and layout interact with stocking density: pens where pigs can spatially organize into clear lying, dunging, and activity areas show less disruption than undifferentiated rectangular spaces without distinct zones. Feeding systems that ensure all pigs can access feed simultaneously eliminate the aggression and nutritional inequality that competitive feeding creates. Enrichment provision — particularly straw or fibrous substrate — reduces tail biting and redirected aggression regardless of space allowance, providing welfare benefit across the stocking density range.
