Recreational angling involves millions of participants worldwide and raises welfare questions about the capacity of fish to suffer during catch-and-release and kill fishing. Evidence-based guidance helps anglers minimize fish welfare harm.
Recreational angling occupies an unusual position in the animal welfare landscape: it is one of the most widely practiced forms of direct human interaction with wild vertebrates, yet it receives relatively little welfare scrutiny compared to farming or animal testing. The welfare question for angling is not simple: fish caught by anglers experience a series of stressors from hooking through landing, handling, and either release or killing. The physiological stress response — elevated cortisol, metabolic disruption, immune suppression — is measurable and persists for hours to days after the catch event. The behavioral effects include altered predator avoidance, altered feeding behavior, and in some studies, measurable reduction in survival probability compared to uncaught fish. Best practice catch-and-release technique minimizes these harms: barbless hooks reduce injury and handling time; minimal air exposure preserves gill function; wet hands reduce mucus layer damage; rapid, forceful hook removal with appropriate tools; and immediate return without photography in stressed fish. Kill fishing with rapid brain dispatch — the priest — causes death faster than release and is arguably preferable welfare to poor catch-and-release for the individual fish.
