Shelter provision for livestock is a fundamental welfare requirement that varies in urgency by species, climate, production system, and season, but is rarely entirely optional. The thermal comfort zone of each species — the range of environmental temperatures within which they can maintain body temperature without additional energy expenditure — defines the conditions where shelter becomes welfare-critical. Below the lower critical temperature, animals must burn stored energy reserves to maintain body temperature; prolonged exposure to cold below thermoneutral conditions causes welfare harm through energy depletion, hypothermia risk, and increased disease susceptibility. For neonates of all species — lambs, piglets, calves, foals — thermoregulation is limited or absent for the first hours to days of life, making birth environment temperatures critical. Summer heat stress causes welfare harm in the opposite direction: impaired thermoregulation, reduced feed intake, elevated stress hormones, and in severe cases hyperthermia and death. The welfare investment in shelter — whether natural tree cover, hedgerows, three-sided field shelters, or ventilated buildings — is among the most cost-effective welfare interventions available to livestock farmers across the temperature spectrum.
