Digital technologies including sensors, cameras, and AI are transforming welfare monitoring on livestock farms. The promise and limitations of these approaches deserve careful examination.
Welfare monitoring technology offers genuinely exciting possibilities for detecting health and behavioral problems earlier and at scale. However, the technology is only as good as the welfare standards it monitors. AI systems trained on data from suboptimal production systems will normalize poor welfare as baseline. The greatest potential is in empowering farmers with better information and enabling more targeted veterinary interventions. Technology cannot substitute for systemic improvements in housing, management, and stocking density.
