Wild animal suffering is vast in scope but rarely discussed. Understanding the scale of suffering in nature is fundamental to the emerging field of wild animal welfare.
Wild animal suffering is the largest animal welfare problem by numerical scope — the sheer number of sentient animals experiencing suffering in natural ecosystems dwarfs all human-caused suffering many times over. This does not mean we should intervene extensively in nature — the risks of unintended consequences are real and significant. But it does suggest that wild animal welfare deserves serious research attention, that benign interventions such as disease management and habitat optimization are worth pursuing, and that our moral circle should encompass the suffering of wild animals alongside those in human care.
