Flamingos are social birds with complex behavioural needs that present significant challenges in zoo environments. Flock size, habitat design, and breeding management all critically affect their welfare.
Flamingos in zoos face significant welfare challenges if flock size is too small or habitat design is inadequate. Their highly social nature means isolation or small groups can cause chronic stress. The highly specialised feeding behaviour of flamingos, using inverted filter-feeding in shallow water, must be accommodated to allow natural behaviour expression. Zoos that maintain large flocks with appropriate habitat provide substantially better welfare than those with token pairs in generic waterfowl exhibits.
