Anxiety disorders including separation anxiety, noise phobia, and generalised anxiety affect millions of companion animals. These conditions cause significant suffering and are often undertreated.
Anxiety causes sustained psychological suffering in companion animals. A dog experiencing separation anxiety for 8 hours daily during working hours is enduring repeated acute distress throughout its life. Yet anxiety disorders are often dismissed as nuisance behaviours or addressed with punishment that worsens the underlying condition. Recognition that anxiety represents genuine suffering requiring clinical management is essential to improving welfare for millions of animals in human households.
