Epilepsy and other seizure disorders affect around 1-2% of dogs and cause significant distress during episodes. Long-term management focuses on minimising seizure frequency while preserving quality of life.
Seizures are distressing events for both dogs and their owners, but the inter-ictal welfare of well-managed epileptic dogs can be good. The welfare priorities are minimising seizure frequency through appropriate medication, avoiding treatment-related side effects such as sedation and liver toxicity, and monitoring the cumulative impact of seizures on cognitive function. Breeding decisions matter significantly: known epileptic dogs should not be bred, and breed clubs should prioritise reducing epilepsy prevalence through health screening programmes.
