The routine use of antibiotics in livestock farming to promote growth and prevent disease in crowded conditions is a major driver of antimicrobial resistance, threatening both animal and human health.
Antibiotic overuse in livestock is both an animal welfare and a public health crisis. From a welfare perspective, the dependence on antibiotics masks the underlying problem: animals kept in overcrowded, stressful conditions that would be unsustainable without chemical intervention. Transitioning to lower-antibiotic systems requires improving housing, reducing stocking densities, and selecting disease-resistant genetics — all of which also improve animal welfare directly.
