Mice housed in barren cages with no nesting material, no shelter, and inadequate social contact show clear signs of chronic stress. Ironically, this stress can compromise the scientific validity of research results. Enriched housing improves welfare and may produce more reliable, translatable research outcomes. The research community is increasingly recognizing this alignment between welfare and scientific quality.
