Parrots are among the most cognitively complex companion animals and among the most commonly poorly housed. Their sophisticated behavioral needs are rarely met in typical pet settings, causing chronic psychological distress.
Companion parrots are chronically mismatched with the environments that humans provide. They require constant mental stimulation, complex social interaction, opportunities for flight and foraging, and predictable routines. Most parrot owners cannot provide these things adequately. The result is epidemic psychological suffering expressed through feather destruction, screaming, self-mutilation, and aggression. The ethical imperative is to take parrot welfare needs seriously before acquisition and provide the intensive enrichment and care these birds genuinely require.
