Feral cats exist in a welfare gray zone — they are neither fully wild nor owned companion animals. Their lives are genuinely difficult — shorter, marked by injury, disease, and weather exposure — yet they retain some behavioral autonomy. The ethics of TNR versus lethal control versus doing nothing are contested. From an individual cat welfare perspective, well-managed TNR colonies with food provision, health monitoring, and shelter provide meaningfully better welfare than unmanaged populations or ineffective mass trapping programs.
