Flamingo welfare in zoos depends heavily on flock size — small groups fail to provide the social stimulation and security these birds need. Access to appropriate wading water for filter-feeding behavior, specialized diet supplementation, and protection from disturbances are all critical. The biggest welfare challenge for zoo flamingos is often inadequate flock size (under 20 birds) and insufficient water area for natural feeding behavior.
