Domestic rats are highly intelligent, social animals that bond closely with human owners. Despite this, they are among the most commonly neglected small pets, often kept in conditions that fail to meet their complex behavioral needs.
Rats in small cages without companions, enrichment, or daily handling suffer behaviorally and physically. Their intelligence means that environmental deprivation causes genuine psychological distress. Common welfare failures include single housing (causing chronic loneliness), cages too small for exercise and exploration, wire mesh floors causing foot sores, and failure to seek veterinary care for respiratory signs. The short lifespan means welfare problems develop and worsen quickly. Rats deserve the same attention to behavioral needs as cats or dogs — they are cognitively sophisticated animals capable of suffering and enjoyment.
