Chinchillas are popular pets with very specific welfare needs that differ markedly from other small mammals. Poor husbandry — particularly around diet and dental health — causes significant preventable suffering.
Chinchilla welfare failures commonly involve overheating, incorrect diet causing dental disease, and inadequate dust bathing leading to fur and skin problems. Dental malocclusion — where teeth misalign and overgrow, sometimes growing into the tongue or cheeks — causes severe chronic pain and eventually inability to eat. It often results from diets too low in fiber and high in soft foods. Many owners are unaware their chinchilla is in dental pain until the animal has stopped eating, by which point the disease is advanced. Appropriate hay-based diets, cool environments, regular dust baths, and annual dental checks by a small mammal veterinarian are essential preventive welfare measures.
