Vultures provide irreplaceable ecological services as nature primary scavengers, yet they face severe persecution, poisoning, and habitat loss. Several African and Asian vulture species are now critically endangered.
Individual vultures killed by poisoning suffer acute toxic deaths — the suffering associated with organophosphate and other common poisons used in Africa can be severe. Lead poisoning from ingested bullet fragments causes progressive neurological deterioration over weeks. The scale of vulture poisoning events is catastrophic for both individual welfare and population viability. Given their slow reproduction, individual deaths have outsized population consequences. The California condor recovery demonstrates that intensive conservation intervention can reverse even extreme population collapse, but requires massive sustained effort and elimination of lead ammunition in condor range.
