Urban foxes face a range of welfare challenges: road mortality, mange, snare injuries from rural culling operations, and deliberate poisoning. Mange can cause extreme suffering — intense itching, hair loss, and eventual starvation if left untreated, but is readily treatable with medication distributed through food bait. Individual fox welfare can be improved by community mange treatment programs, traffic-calming measures, and reduction of snare use. The persecution of foxes through poisoning, shooting, and snaring in rural areas causes significant animal suffering for questionable population management benefit. Coexistence strategies based on habitat management and deterrents are more effective and more humane.
