Insect farming is growing rapidly as a sustainable protein source, but the welfare of the billions of insects raised and killed annually remains scientifically contested and almost entirely unregulated.
Insect welfare occupies an uncertain middle ground in animal ethics. Current evidence suggests that insects have nociceptors and show behavioral responses to tissue damage, but lack the cortical structures associated with conscious suffering in vertebrates. However, the precautionary principle suggests that given this uncertainty, and given the extraordinary scale of insect farming (trillions of animals), even small probabilities of suffering would represent enormous aggregate harm. Welfare considerations include stocking density, thermal extremes during transport and slaughter, substrate quality, and access to food and water. The field of insect welfare science is nascent, with researchers beginning to develop evidence-based welfare indicators and humane slaughter assessment frameworks.
