Cetacean strandings involve significant and prolonged suffering. Beached whales experience thermal stress as their thick blubber layer, designed to retain heat in cold water, causes dangerous overheating in air. Their body weight compresses internal organs and restricts breathing over hours to days. Dehydration progresses rapidly. Large whales that cannot be refloated face euthanasia decisions that are logistically complex given their size, requiring specialists with purpose-designed delivery methods. Smaller dolphins and porpoises have better survival rates when discovered quickly and refloated with appropriate support. Preventing strandings through sonar regulation, marine pollution reduction, and climate action is far preferable to rescue, which even under optimal conditions has high mortality rates for large whales.
