Raptors including eagles, hawks, and owls are disproportionately affected by lead poisoning, rodenticide poisoning, and deliberate persecution, causing significant individual suffering and population-level decline.
Raptor poisoning causes severe and prolonged suffering. Lead poisoning progresses through neurological deterioration including weakness, inability to fly, seizures, and ultimately death over days to weeks. Anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning causes internal hemorrhaging that weakens birds progressively before death. Raptors that survive poisoning events may suffer permanent neurological damage reducing their ability to hunt and reproduce. The geographic scale of these welfare impacts is enormous: virtually every raptor population in the developed world shows measurable tissue contamination from lead or anticoagulants. Wildlife rehabilitation centers treat thousands of poisoned raptors annually, with many unable to be returned to the wild. Preventable through simple substitutions (copper ammunition, enclosed bait stations) but requiring regulatory action that faces intense industry opposition.
