Pet turtle welfare failures are predominantly husbandry-related and stem from the dramatic mismatch between the low perceived care needs suggested by their small size and slow movements and the actual complexity of their environmental requirements. Turtles and tortoises require species-appropriate thermal gradients, UV-B supplementation, varied diets, adequate aquatic and terrestrial space, and specialized veterinary care from reptile practitioners. The extraordinarily long lifespan of many species means that welfare compromises accumulate over decades, and ownership transitions between multiple families are common. The release of unwanted turtles into wild environments is both ecologically damaging for native species and harmful to the released animals, which rarely survive without human care once acclimated to captivity.
