Mussel welfare sits at the frontier of invertebrate sentience research. While mussels lack the neural complexity associated with conscious suffering in vertebrates, they possess sensory systems that detect and respond to tissue damage. The scientific consensus remains that bivalves are unlikely to experience subjective suffering in the way that vertebrates do, but this is not certain. From a practical welfare standpoint, mussel farming involves relatively little handling stress compared to vertebrate aquaculture, and harvesting by cooking appears to cause rapid physiological shutdown. The more significant concern may be environmental: mussel farming can alter local water chemistry, sediment composition, and benthic communities in ways that affect wild invertebrates and other species. Mussel consumption remains among the most defensible animal protein choices from both environmental and welfare perspectives given current evidence.
