The gap between available analgesic options and actual use in livestock farming represents one of the most addressable welfare failures in modern animal agriculture. Effective, affordable pain management options exist for virtually all common livestock procedures, yet adoption rates remain low due to economic pressure, time constraints, and the absence of regulatory requirements. Farmers who use analgesics consistently report no adverse effects on production performance and often observe improved animal behavior and recovery. The welfare improvement from mandatory analgesia for painful procedures would be enormous given the scale: hundreds of millions of piglets, calves, and lambs undergo procedures annually without pain management. Veterinary education and regulatory requirements are the most effective levers for closing this analgesic gap.
