Wild bee populations are declining dramatically worldwide due to habitat loss, pesticide exposure, disease, and climate change, with profound consequences for ecosystem function and the welfare of billions of individual bees.
Wild bee welfare encompasses both the direct suffering of individual bees exposed to pesticides, disease, and habitat loss, and the population-level welfare implications of declining bee abundance. Sublethal neonicotinoid exposure impairs learning and navigation in ways that reduce foraging success and increase mortality. Parasitic infections including Varroa mites (primarily affecting honeybees) and gut parasites cause significant morbidity. Habitat fragmentation reduces food availability, forcing bees to fly longer distances at greater energetic cost. Given emerging evidence of bumblebee cognitive complexity including tool use and social learning, individual bee welfare deserves more attention than the conventional view of insects as simple automatons would suggest. Conservation actions benefiting bee populations simultaneously benefit individual bee welfare by reducing exposure to these stressors.
