Sea lice infestations in farmed Atlantic salmon cause significant welfare harm, and the chemical, biological, and mechanical treatments used to control them present their own welfare challenges and environmental risks.
Sea lice management in salmon aquaculture presents a compound welfare problem: infestation causes chronic suffering, but most available treatments cause acute stress of their own. Chemical bath treatments with hydrogen peroxide or organophosphates expose fish to physiological shock and can cause mortality in compromised individuals. Mechanical treatments using high-pressure water or temperature shock are effective but stressful. The widespread use of cleaner fish as biological control agents has created a welfare problem for the cleaner fish themselves, with wrasse and lumpfish experiencing high mortality rates in salmon cages due to inappropriate densities, predation, and inadequate care. Land-based recirculating aquaculture systems eliminate sea lice exposure entirely but involve high capital costs and different welfare challenges related to stocking density and water quality.
