Laboratory animal welfare represents a domain where scientific expertise and ethical commitment have driven genuine progress through the Three Rs framework, while enormous welfare challenges remain due to the scale of animal use and the persistence of practices that cause significant suffering. Refinement advances including better analgesia, enriched housing, and humane endpoints have reduced per-animal suffering substantially in well-managed facilities. However, adherence to welfare standards varies across institutions and countries, and the use of animals in procedures causing severe suffering remains substantial. The push for replacement of animal models with human-relevant alternatives including organoids, organ-on-chip, and computational models is the most transformative welfare intervention available but requires sustained investment in validation and regulatory acceptance.
