Dairy goat farming is often perceived as higher welfare than cattle dairying, but goats have specific social, cognitive and environmental needs that intensive systems frequently fail to meet.
Dairy goats have long been considered a more welfare-friendly alternative to intensive cattle farming, but this perception often does not reflect the reality of commercial production. Like cows, dairy does are subjected to repeated pregnancies and routine separation from their kids, causing documented grief responses in both mother and offspring. Goats are intelligent, inquisitive animals that suffer from barren environments lacking climbing structures, varied substrates or foraging complexity. Disbudding causes acute pain and, without adequate pain relief, represents a significant welfare failure affecting millions of young animals annually. Higher welfare certifications are available but remain a small proportion of the market.
