Pigs are among the most cognitively sophisticated of farmed animals, possessing the curiosity and problem-solving drive of animals accustomed to complex, information-rich environments. In barren concrete-floored pens, this behavioral complexity has no productive outlet, manifesting instead as redirected aggression toward pen-mates. Tail biting is the most visible symptom of this welfare failure, often triggering a cascade of escalating injury. Enrichment rotation programs that provide new materials — chains, ropes, wood blocks, straw, compost — on regular schedules maintain novelty and sustained engagement.
