Welfare Considerations

Atlantic salmon aquaculture is one of the highest-scale animal production systems in the world and one of the most welfare-significant. Sea lice infestations are endemic in open-net cage systems and cause persistent dermal wounds and immune suppression. Crowding triggers chronic cortisol elevation, aggression and fin erosion. Treatments for sea lice — including chemical baths, thermal delicing and mechanical removal — each carry significant acute welfare costs. At slaughter, many operations still use methods such as live chilling that cause prolonged distress before loss of consciousness. Consumer pressure, certification schemes and regulatory requirements for humane slaughter are all driving gradual improvement, but the scale of welfare compromise remains enormous.
