Sun bear welfare in temperate-climate zoos presents challenges of both habitat replication and behavioral complexity. These are highly active, cognitively engaged animals that in the wild invest substantial time and energy in locating and extracting embedded food sources — a behavior poorly supported by simple food bowl provisioning. Without adequate foraging enrichment, sun bears exhibit stereotypic oral behaviors and repetitive locomotion that indicate chronic environmental frustration. Social housing requires careful assessment as individuals vary widely in tolerance of conspecifics. Best-practice facilities provide heated outdoor access, extensive climbing structures, log foraging substrates with embedded food and naturalistic planting that encourages exploratory behavior.
