Feedlot beef production represents a significant departure from the grazing lifestyle for which cattle evolved, creating welfare challenges that range from nutritional to behavioral to social. The abrupt transition from high-fiber pasture diets to energy-dense grain rations causes rumenal pH disruption and associated painful acidosis if not carefully managed. Feedlot environments lack the space and substrate diversity to allow normal grazing locomotion, increasing lameness risk. Social stress from unstable groupings of unfamiliar animals causes persistent agonistic interactions. Mud in poorly drained feedlots contributes to foot rot and skin conditions. Higher welfare beef production — through slower growth on pasture or with meaningful outdoor access — exists and is growing but represents a small proportion of global production.
