Adequate water access is a fundamental welfare requirement for pigs that is frequently compromised by inadequate nipple drinker provision, malfunctioning equipment and high competition at limited water points.
Water access is among the most fundamental of welfare requirements yet water deprivation in pig farming is more common than often acknowledged. Nipple drinkers — the dominant watering system in commercial pig production — require adequate flow rate, correct height positioning and sufficient numbers to allow all pigs access without excessive competition. When drinkers malfunction, block or are positioned incorrectly, pigs may go hours without access in environments where behavior-based indicators of thirst are subtle and easy to miss during routine inspections. Water deprivation causes rapid cognitive and behavioral deterioration in pigs, who are among the most cognitively active of farmed species. Regular drinker checks, flow rate testing and provision of additional water access points during hot weather are straightforward interventions with significant welfare impact.
