Immunocastration achieves the same outcome as surgical castration without pain, through two vaccinations that suppress testosterone production. The transition to immunocastration has been commercially successful in the Netherlands and several other countries without negative consumer response. Genetic selection programs identifying and breeding low-taint boars offer a longer-term solution that eliminates the need for any intervention. The welfare case for eliminating surgical castration without pain relief is strong and the alternatives are demonstrably viable.
