Welfare outcome measurement for farmed salmon has advanced significantly through development of operational welfare indicators (OWIs) that can be applied at scale during routine husbandry operations.
The development of operational welfare indicators has transformed salmon welfare assessment from theoretical to practical. OWIs allow farm staff to score welfare outcomes during normal operations without additional specialized procedures. Cataracts, fin damage, wound scores, and behavioral indicators including surface crowding and reduced responsiveness to stimuli provide a welfare profile that informs management decisions. Norwegian regulatory requirements for welfare indicator recording have driven industry improvement in farms that previously had no systematic welfare monitoring. Extending similar requirements to salmon farming in Scotland, Canada, Chile, and other major producing countries would improve welfare outcomes for billions of individual fish annually.
