Rabbits are the third most farmed animal species globally, yet they receive minimal welfare protection in most countries. Their complex behavioral needs are almost entirely unmet in conventional cages.
Commercial rabbit welfare is one of the most neglected areas in farm animal welfare advocacy. Rabbits confined in small wire cages experience chronic fear from exposure without hiding cover, painful foot lesions from wire flooring, and complete behavioral deprivation. As prey animals, their fear responses are intense and sustained. Colony systems that allow hiding, social grouping, and some freedom of movement represent a significant welfare improvement, though adoption remains limited. Consumer pressure and corporate welfare commitments have driven more rapid change for poultry than rabbits.
